Each year the CMP recognizes superior accomplishments in the field of mineral processing at Annual Awards Gala.

We seek nominations for the following CMP Awards.

  • Mineral Processor of the Year  
  • Bill Moore Special Achiever  
  • NEW - CMP Lifetime Achievement Award 
  • A.R. MacPherson - SAG Award
  • Ray MacDonald Volunteer Award 
  • CIM Fellowship(s)

Past Award Winners

CMP - BEST PRESENTATION AWARD

PURPOSE: Best presentation of a paper at the CMP Conference. The award would be an annual award.

AWARD: A framed scroll (parchment) that will be presented at the following Annual Conference of the CMP; and notification in the CIM BULLETIN

RULES:

  1. Papers authored by any member of the Selection Committee shall be considered ineligible for the Award.  
  2. The decision of the Selection Committee shall be final.
  3. No restrictions are to be attached to eligibility for the Award with respect to nationality, citizenship, age, sex, or occupation of the presenters.
  4. A recipient is only eligible to win the award once in a 3 year period.
  5. The main attributes of each presentation that will be evaluated by the Selection Committee are:

a.) Contribution to mineral processing
b.) Quality of visual Aids
c.) Quality of Audio - Speaking Manner
d.) Good use of allotted Time; (penalty for over-runs).
e.) Was the formal paper read or was it used as a reference.
f.) Did the presentation have a logical structure.
g.) Overall impact of the presentation.

  1. Selection Committee

a.) Chairman - 1st Vice-Chairman
b.) Chairman - selects 4 members to work on this committee.
c.) For each session of the Annual CMP Conference presentations, the Chairman will request assistance from his committee and/or the CMP membership to do the presentation evaluations. They will be designated "EVALUATOR".
d.) The "EVALUATOR" will identify the PRESENTER'S NAME PAPER TITLE and PAPER NUMBER, They will use their best judgement to evaluate the series of presentations that they have agreed to attend, The "EVALUATOR" WILL SIGN his/her EVALUATION SHEET and return it to the Chairman.
e.) Selection of the Winner:

    • A sum of the "TOTAL MARKS", from the evaluation sheets for each presentation, will be made. If there is a difference in the number of evaluations of a presentation (not less than 3 evaluations), then a calculated "pro-rated" total for the presentation will be made.
    • The "highest scoring" presentation (presenter) will be the winner,
    • If a tie should occur, then the committee will give more "point weighting" for selected evaluation attributes so a winner is obtained.

 

CANADIAN MINERAL PROCESSORS AWARD CRITERIA

The nominating committee consists of the Present Chairman and several Past Chairmen. All awards are presented at the Annual Awards Dinner, held during the Annual Operators Conference in January of each year.

MINERAL PROCESSOR OF THE YEAR AWARD

  1. The award will be made from time to time as circumstances warrant, in recognition of meritorious service or an outstanding technical contribution to the industry.
  2. The award shall consist of an appropriate plaque and other testimonial as decided from time to time by the Board of Directors.
  3. No more than one award may be made in one year.
  4. The recipient will normally be a member of the Canadian Mineral Processors Division but non-members with exceptional qualifications may be considered for the award.
  5. The nominating committee as duly appointed in the by-laws will recommend a suitable candidate or candidates to the Board of Directors for the award.
  6. The membership at large shall nominate candidates for the awards. The nomination shall be supported by at least five members of the Division.
  7. Every nomination shall be accompanied by a statement giving clearly the reason, which, in the opinion of the nominators, make their nominee a suitable candidate for the award.
  8. The Board of Directors of the Division shall assess the merits of the candidates and make the final adjudication of the award.
  9. The award should be presented during the Annual Operators Conference. If this time and place is not suitable, the Board of Directors may specify suitable alternate arrangements for the presentation of the award.

     

THE BILL MOORE SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD  

  1. The award will be made from time to time as circumstances warrant in recognition of meritorious service to the division or an outstanding technical contribution to the industry.
  2. The award shall consist of an appropriate plaque and other testimonial as decided by the Board of Directors.
  3. No more than one award may be made in one year.
  4. The recipient will normally be a member of the Canadian Mineral Processors Division but non-members with exceptional qualifications may be considered for the award. This award is specifically intended to honour a younger member of the industry under the age of 35. This age restriction may be waived if, in the opinion of the Board of Directors, a suitable candidate is not available and another highly qualified candidate outside the age restriction is nominated.
  5. The nominating committee as duly appointed in the by-laws will recommend a suitable candidate or candidates to the Board of Directors for the award.
  6. The membership at large shall nominate candidates for the award. The nomination shall be supported by at least five members of the Division.
  7. Every nomination shall be accompanied by a statement giving clearly the reason, which in the opinion of the nominators, make their nominee a suitable candidate for the award.
  8. The Board of Directors of the Division shall assess the merits of the candidates and make the final adjudication of the award.
  9. The award should be presented during the Annual Operators Conference. If this time and place is not suitable the Board of Directors may specify suitable alternate arrangements for the presentation.

     

THE ART MACPHERSON COMMINUTION AWARD

This Award, sponsored by SGS Lakefield Research through The Canadian Mineral Processing Division of CIM honours Art MacPherson who passed away on September 25, 2000.  Following graduation from The Technical University of Nova Scotia (TUNS) in 1934, MacPherson served with the Royal Canadian Engineers during World War II.  In 1946 he joined the Department of Mines & Technical surveys in Ottawa and initiated a strong interest in autogenous grinding.  Five years later he joined Aerofall Mills Ltd, ultimately serving as Executive Vice-President & General Manager, where he developed dry grinding systems in iron, copper and uranium plants.  He moved to Bechtel in 1962 and pioneered large grinding circuits for many major projects including the Carol project of IOC, the Griffith Mine and Lornex.  He was a consultant to Island Copper, Similkameen, and Highland Valley Copper.  Art devoted a lifetime to pioneering achievement in the field of mineral processing.  He introduced innovative engineering design methodology, which became firmly established in the industry, for the development and construction of autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding circuits.  His achievements were recognized by many including the AIME who awarded Art the prestigious AIME Richards Award  ---  the first Canadian to receive it in its 40 year history. 
           
The Art MacPherson Award will be given from time to time (but not more than once a year) as circumstances warrant.  In the year that the CMP-CAMIRO-UBC sponsored SAG conference is held, the award will be presented at the event.  In all other years, it may be presented at the annual CMP Operators Conference

The criteria for the award will be “significant contributions to the advancement of Comminution” and shall consist of a gold medallion.  A recipient normally will be a member of the Canadian Mineral Processors Division but non-members with exceptional qualifications may be considered for the award.  Nominations, accompanied by a statement giving clear reasons why a nominee is a suitable candidate for the award, should be supported by at least 5 members of the CMP.  In addition, the CMP executive and/or the local and international advisory committee of the SAG Conference will be asked to recommend suitable candidate(s) for the award during a  year in which a SAG Conference is held. 
The Award was first presented at the SAG Conference in 2001 to Andrew L. Mular, Emeritus of Mineral Process Engineering, Dept. of Mining at UBC.

Conditions of the Award

  1. The award will be a CMP award, sponsored by SGS Lakefield Research through the Canadian Mineral Processors Division of CIM.  It will be made from time to time as circumstances warrant; in the year that the CIM/CMP sponsored SAG Conference is held, the award will be presented at that event; in all other years, it will be presented at the annual CMP Operators Meeting.
  2. The criteria for the award will be “significant contribution to the advancement of comminution”.
  3. The award shall consist of a gold medallion as well as a monetary component which will be provided by A.R. MacPherson Consulting Ltd.
  4. No more than one award may be made per annum.
  5. The recipient will normally be a member of the Canadian Mineral Processors Division but non-members with exceptional qualifications may be considered for the award.
  6. The CMP Executive, the Organizing Committee, or International Advisory Committee of the SAG Conference with input from A.R. MacPherson Consulting Ltd. shall recommend a suitable candidate or candidates to the Board of Directors for the award.
  7. The membership at large shall nominate candidates for the award.  The nomination shall be supported by at least five members of the Division.
  8. All nominations shall be accompanied by a statement giving clearly the reasons, which in the opinion of the nominators, make a nominee a suitable candidate for the award.
  9. The Board of Directors of the Division shall assess the merits of the candidates and make the final adjudication of the award.

CANADIAN MINERAL PROCESSORS

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

DESCRIPTION: Awarded by the membership at the Annual Meeting for demonstrated excellence in the science of mineral beneficiation and ongoing contribution to the Canadian Mineral Processors.

CRITERIA: Nominated by five CMP members and a Member of the Canadian Mineral Processors or affiliates, for 20 years or more. Selection criteria should consider demonstrated abilities and contributions to the science of minerals beneficiation in ; as an operator, research scientist, engineer, or academic. The recipient should also have provided valuable contributions to the Canadian Mineral Processors and be or have been an active participant in the Canadian Mineral Processors meetings and activities.

AWARD: The award will consist of commemorative plaque and a waiver of annual dues and meeting registration for the Canadian Mineral Processors division activities.
